How Many Cigarettes Are in an Elf Bar?

If you're cutting down on smoking or switching to vaping, this is usually the first question you ask, and most answers you'll find are either marketing or guesswork. The honest answer has two parts — puffs and nicotine — and they point in slightly different directions. Let me walk you through both.

The puff maths: about 48 cigarettes per bar

A cigarette gives you around 10–15 puffs before it hits the filter. An Elf Bar 600 is rated for roughly 600 puffs. Divide one by the other and you get 40–60 cigarettes' worth of puffing from one bar — the middle of that range, about 48 cigarettes, is the number most people quote. That's two and a half packs.

Flip it around and you get the more useful day-to-day figure: 12–13 puffs on an Elf Bar roughly stand in for one cigarette. If you smoked ten a day, that's about 120–130 puffs spread across the day.

One caveat: that 600-puff rating comes from machine testing with short, gentle puffs. Take long, deep draws and you'll empty a bar well short of 600 — closer to 400 is common. I've covered why advertised puff counts run high in my Lost Mary puff count guide, and the same applies to Elf Bars.

The nicotine maths: 40mg per bar

The standard Elf Bar 600 in the UK contains 2ml of e-liquid at 20mg/ml — 40mg of nicotine in total. That 2ml/20mg combination is the legal ceiling for UK vapes, which is why nearly every disposable-style device lands on the same numbers.

A cigarette contains around 10–12mg of nicotine, but your body only absorbs roughly 1–2mg of it. So in absorbed-nicotine terms, one Elf Bar sits somewhere in the region of 20–40 cigarettes, depending on how you vape it.

Why the comparison isn't one-to-one

Elf Bars use nicotine salts, which are smoother on the throat and absorbed quickly — closer to the feel of a cigarette than old-style freebase liquid. But vapour still delivers nicotine more gradually than smoke, and there's no fixed "end" the way a cigarette burns out.

In practice that changes how people use them. Smokers finish a cigarette because it's there; vapers take a few puffs and put the bar down. Most pack-a-day smokers I've heard from make one 600-puff bar last two to three days, even though the puff maths says it "should" equal their daily pack. A few go the other way at first and graze on it constantly — if that's you, counting to roughly 13 puffs per "cigarette" helps rebuild the natural stopping points.

What changed with the UK disposable ban

Since 1 June 2025, single-use vapes can't legally be sold anywhere in the UK, and the classic throwaway Elf Bar 600 went with them. What's on shelves now are rechargeable versions of the same device — same flavours, same 2ml of 20mg/ml liquid, but with a USB-C port and, on most models, replaceable pods.

For this question, nothing changes: a 600-puff pod still equals the same 40–60 cigarettes' worth of puffs and the same 40mg of nicotine. You just charge the battery instead of binning the whole thing.

What this means if you're switching

If you're using Elf Bars to move off cigarettes, the maths is on your side. One bar costs around £5–6, replaces two packs or more of smoking, and cuts out the tar and carbon monoxide that come with burning tobacco. UK health bodies are clear that vaping isn't risk-free — but for a smoker, it's a far less harmful way to get nicotine, and I've written about what actually happens to your body when you switch.

Don't obsess over matching cigarette numbers puff-for-puff. Vape when you'd have smoked, put it down when the craving passes, and let the device last as long as it lasts. If you're getting through bars noticeably faster than you got through packs, drop to a lower strength rather than rationing puffs — it's the nicotine rhythm that keeps the switch stable, not willpower.
